Angela Powers Melo

Cellist

Angela has over 25 years performing experience in the realms of chamber, orchestral, and solo music.  She has played in many genres including standard classical repertoire, renaissance, opera, jazz, pop, and classic rock, as well as gained direct experience playing latino music while living and performing in Brazil.

Angela’s primary focus is in playing chamber music and had extensive chamber music training throughout her high school and college years.  On numerous occasions, she participated in cello and quartet masterclasses given by professionals from the US and around the world.  During her undergraduate degree, she and her quartet competed in the National Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and were semi-finalists.  Although her passion lies in chamber music, Angela has played with numerous orchestras and has been principal cellist in a large number of the orchestral settings with which she has performed.

In addition to being a performer, Angela is an active teacher.  She has worked in various settings as a private and group instructor independently and at the collegiate level, as well as a coach for chamber groups and sectionals in different regions in the United States and Brazil. Her current studio encompasses the Greater Portland area, mainly Lake Oswego, Tigard, West Linn, and Wilsonville.  Angela's private cello instruction incorporates the repertoire from the Suzuki Cello Method as well as additional materials which she has used successfully with students of all ages.  Angela encourages her students to develop strong music-reading skills and music theory understanding along with developing a solid foundation in cello technique.

Angela carries a Bachelors degree in Cello Performance and a Masters degree in Entertainment Business.  In addition to her degrees, she has also had further coursework in instrumental methods and teaching, education, and Suzuki pedagogy.  In her limited spare time, she loves to learn foreign languages and painting.
